This award is given to scientists and scientific organizations for outstanding contribution to the development of science.
The winners of the Web of Science Awards in Russia are determined on the basis of counting the number of highly cited publications in the database of the Web of Science Core Collection. A document is considered to be highly cited, if it’s published in the Web of Science Core Collection during the last 10 years, and if it is included in 1% of the most cited works in certain research area.
Highly cited scientists are the authors of the largest number of such publications. More than 1,600 published works and their authors were included in selection of experts in 2017. Among them - the director of the Scientific Research Institute of Medical Primatology (Raisa Gorbacheva Memorial Research Institute of Children Oncology, Hematology and Transplantation, Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University), Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor S.V. Orlov.
Professor Orlov says:
“My scientific interests are concentrated in the development of new types of drug therapy for oncological diseases. First of all, I and my colleagues are studying the possibilities of targeted therapy and the use of new immuno-oncological drugs for the treatment of solid tumors. Particular attention is paid to the study of treatment options for a rare type of lung cancer - ALK-positive (Anaplastic Limphoma Kinase). We have gained the largest in Russia experience of treating this pathology - more than 100 patients. The article is devoted to its’ treatment (First-line ceritinib versus platinum-based chemotherapy in advanced ALK-rearranged non-small-cell lung cancer (ASCEND-4): a randomized, open-label, phase 3 study - The Lancet, 2017, No. 389 (10072) 917-929). This article summarizes the experience of several research centers. The main goal is to increase the life expectancy of oncological patients. Significant results have been achieved in the use of therapy for certain types of disease, in particular - for lung cancer. Medical science is a truly international sphere of activity, therefore the exchange of experience (and scientific publications to some extent can be considered as an exchange of experience) is very important, because it opens the prospect of a joint solution of many health problems.
Nowadays, citation and Hirsch index are of great importance, because these scientometric data often help to assess the activities of both a particular employee and the institution as a whole. It is necessary to support the publication activity of young scientists: the writing and publication of scientific articles develop many skills, and it is impossible to achieve success in research and clinical work without them. In addition, worthy publications open the way for young specialists to the international medical community. "
It is also pleasant to note that “the Web of Science Awards-2016” was given to the graduate of 1 LMI named after acad. I.P. Pavlov, head of the scientific department of reproductive system tumors and the department of breast tumors in National Medical Research Center of Oncology named after N.N. Petrov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor V.F. Semiglazov, who still remains on the list of highly cited authors in Russia.
